Our story

A trip to Mexico, and a breakfast house on the Ronda

Malcriada: spoiled, in Spanish. That is what happened to Adriana in Mexico, and what La Malcriada sets out to do to everyone who sits down for breakfast.

A road trip that changed course

As Plateselector told it in January 2022, Adriana, who runs La Malcriada, had set off on a road trip through Latin America. It ended up as a total plot twist in her life, because of how she was “spoiled” in Mexico.

In Oaxaca, one of the country’s richest food cities, she met friends who happened to be brunch-style chefs. That stay, those people and the pandemic gave her the courage to change course and open La Malcriada.

«A todos nos gusta que nos mimen y porque no, que nos malcríen de vez en cuando, y eso es lo que le pasó a Adriana, responsable de La Malcriada.»

Spoiled through the palate

The name says it all. The article described it as an inclusive space to enjoy a good brunch and let yourself be spoiled through your palate, thanks to three things: the menu, the bakery and the service.

On the menu, the star dishes were, and still are, eggs benedict, with salmon or bacon, and huevos rancheros, with ranchera sauce on corn tortillas, beans and avocado. Plateselector’s advice: come hungry and in good company, so you can try both.

«Su estancia en Oaxaca, una de las ciudades con más riqueza gastronómica del país, tod@s l@s amig@s que conoció, que casualmente eran chefs de estilo brunch y lamentablemente la pandemia, le dieron el valor suficiente para dar un giro en su vida y abrir La Malcriada.»

Made here

Behind the dishes is their Baking Lab, the bakery where everything is made and new recipes are tried out. That is where the cakes in the display come from, “cheesecake, carrot cake, chocolate y más”, as the board says, and the chocolate and salt cookies. Plateselector called the cheesecake “BRU-TAL”.

Today La Malcriada puts it this way on Instagram: food cooked here, with fresh, local produce. Every month brings a new toast on sourdough, and Monday to Friday there is a lunch menu.

The place and the people

Dinner Stories, which listed it among the best brunch spots in Barcelona in 2022, called it a “trendy brunch house and patisserie”, and wrote: “La Malcriada is a bright and airy space, with a small kerbside seating area.” In summer, the terrace on Ronda de Sant Pere fills with breakfasts.

The team wear the house T-shirt, “Join the brunch club”, and a postcard on the wall says it all: “9 cafés en el cuerpo y 0 remordimientos”, nine coffees down and no regrets. What customers mention most is the welcome: “Les cambreres molt amables”, the waitresses are very kind, says a review on Google.

«Un equipo joven, muy atento y agradable que solo transmite good vibes.»

Every morning, again

Good coffee, great eggs and cakes baked in house: the promise printed on their T-shirt. After the August break, La Malcriada announced it like this, and every weekday it starts again the same way.

«Todo listo, cafetera calentita, mesas preparadas. ¡Empezamos!»
